English, 19th century.
Using a palette of muted earth-tones, the artist places in the middle-ground of this work, two contrasting ponies: a white Welsh mare and a dark-brown Dartmoor mare amidst a wide expanse of gorse and shrubbery. The canvas is bathed in golden sunshine that highlights the vivid ochre hues of the gorse and the manes and tails of the horses.
The English impressionist Sir Alfred James Munnings (1878-1959) was noted for his equestrian paintings and plein-air depictions of rural Norwich landscapes which he painted under varying light conditions and often in consideration of his penchant for timeless ‘idle moments’.
