DETAIL:
The painting is an 18th century Spanish Colonial depiction of Santa Maria the Patron Saint of Los Angeles. Below the painting the artist describes in old Spanish the events that occurred:
This is the miraculous image of the divine Lady of the Angels. She appeared to the people during a time of turmoil and tragedy of savage floods which took many homes and endangered the lives of the people, their children and families. They didn’t realize there was so much water, with so many dangers, and were afraid to look and afraid to die. The artist says he wished he could turn around and not see any more water.
It is said that standing on the wall of the sanctuary of the same name (that is also wondrous) Saint Mary of Los Angeles appeared to the people within and helped them through their problems and the losses they endured during these grand dangers, giving them the faith to get through.
