Beautiful Georgian Lovers Eye Brooch from the early 1800's. Handpainted on ivory with gold, pearls and colorless sapphire.
Measures: 3/4"L
Ref. CBM
Charming sentimental Georgian eye brooch, circa 1800. The fashion for the eye brooches came from the Grand Tour - Lady Eleanor Butler noted in her diary in 1785 her delight with such a piece, "An eye done at Paris and set in a ring. A true French idea and a delightful one." The Prince of Wales sent a miniature portrait of his eye along with a marriage proposal to Mrs. Fitzherbert in November 1785. The idea was to bemuse the inquisitive, as it was difficult to recognize the identity of the sitter from a single eye.
